Express Entry: IRCC Invites Candidates in First June Draw

The Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) recently conducted its fourteenth Express Entry draw in 2023, inviting a total of 4,800 candidates to apply for immigration to Canada. This all-program draw required candidates to have a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 486. The draw, which took place in early June, follows the previous draw on May 24, where 4,800 candidates with a minimum CRS score of 488 were invited.

IRCC Announces Category-Based Selection Draws Expected to Begin This Summer

In a recent news release on May 31, the IRCC announced the introduction of six new category-based selection criteria for Express Entry candidates. These categories aim to target candidates with specific attributes that align with Canada's economic goals.

The categories target candidates who work in healthcare, STEM fields, trades like carpentry, plumbing, and contracting, transportation, agriculture and agri-food sectors, or who have high proficiency in French.

The department plans to initiate category-based draws starting this summer, although an exact date has not been provided. Candidates hoping to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in these targeted draws must already be part of the Express Entry pool. IRCC will rank candidates who meet the category requirements and issue ITAs to those with the highest scores. It is important to note that IRCC will continue to hold all-program draws and program-specific draws as needed.

Express Entry in 2023

Since the beginning of 2023, excluding the most recent draw, IRCC has invited a total of 49,948 candidates over 13 draws. This number already surpasses the number of candidates invited between July and November of the previous year. It is worth mentioning that IRCC did not hold any all-program draws until July 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Let's review some of the recent Express Entry draws to gain a better understanding of the program's progress. In May, there were two draws, with the first one being a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) only draw that invited 589 candidates. These candidates were both in the Express Entry pool and nominated by a provincial government.

In April, there were two all-program draws, both inviting 3,500 candidates. The April 12 draw required candidates to have a CRS score of 346, while the April 26 draw had a higher CRS score requirement of 483.

March witnessed a significant number of draws, totaling four, which invited a cumulative total of 21,677 candidates. Three of these draws were all-program draws, each inviting 7,000 candidates, and the remaining draw of 667 candidates was exclusively for the Provincial Nominee Program.

February also had four draws, all program-specific. Three of the draws were for PNP candidates, while the fourth draw specifically targeted candidates in the Federal Skilled Worker Program. This was the first draw of its kind in Express Entry history. In January, there were two all-program draws, each inviting 5,500 candidates.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an application management system established in 2015 by IRCC to facilitate the selection of high-skilled economic immigration candidates for permanent residence in Canada.

The system ranks candidates from three programs for skilled workers using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). It checks different things such as how much they worked and what they did, how good they are at English or French languages, how much they learned, how old they are, and other skills and experience they have. Candidates with more CRS points have a higher chance of getting an invitation to apply for permanent residence.

It is expected that in the future, IRCC will shift its emphasis from solely focusing on high CRS scores to targeting candidates based on specific attributes that are in demand in Canada's economy at the time.

Conclusion

The recent Express Entry draw conducted by IRCC in June marked another significant step in the selection of candidates for immigration to Canada. With the introduction of category-based selection draws and the plan to target specific fields and attributes, IRCC aims to support Canada's economic goals while providing opportunities for skilled candidates to settle in the country. Express Entry continues to evolve and adapt to the changing needs of Canada's workforce offering a pathway for high skilled individuals to contribute to the nation's growth.

FAQs

What is the purpose of Express Entry?

Express Entry was established to help IRCC target high-skilled economic immigration candidates for permanent residence in Canada. It streamlines the selection process and ensures that candidates with the most relevant skills and experience attributes are chosen.

How does the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) work?

The Comprehensive Ranking System is used to evaluate Express Entry candidates based on various factors such as work experience, occupation, language ability, education, age, and other transferable skills. Candidates with higher CRS scores have a greater chance of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

Will the emphasis on high CRS scores change in the future?

IRCC is expected to shift its focus from high CRS scores to targeting candidates based on specific attributes that are in demand in Canada's economy at any given time. This change aims to address the evolving needs of the labor market.

What are category-based selection draws?

Category-based selection draws are a new initiative introduced by IRCC to target candidates with specific attributes that support Canada's economic goals. These draws focus on sectors such as healthcare, science, technology, trades, transportation, agriculture, and candidates with strong French speaking abilities.

How often does IRCC hold Express Entry draws?

IRCC conducts Express Entry draws regularly, based on the needs of the immigration system and the labor market. All-program draws and program-specific draws are held as required to select candidates for permanent residence in Canada.
